Addiction

Acupuncture is a popular complementary treatment in many addiction treatment programs. The standard protocol used in acupuncture treatments is called NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association), an auricular acupuncture treatment consisting of 5 points in each ear using very fine, sterilized needles.

 

NADA is beneficial during the process of detoxification from substance abuse, and also helps with physical, emotional and psychological changes that occur with addiction and detoxification.

 

This protocol is typically done in groups, and the needles remain in for approximately 30-45 minutes. Benefits include not only reduced cravings and anxiety, and better sleep, but also improved program retention, and more cooperation and optimism in the process of recovery.

The 5 points used in the NADA protocol and their individual benefits are:

 Shen Men – calming, relaxing, calms stress, anxieties and sensitivity

 Sympathetic – balances the nervous system, relieves tension

 Liver – detoxifies, relaxes and soothes, relieves anger and irritability

 Kidney – strengthens and tones the body, detoxifies, calms fears

 Lung – improves respiration and detoxifies, helps process grief/sadness

Sandy Root, AP, L.Ac., MSTOM, a FL & NY State Licensed Acupuncturist, graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in New York with her Master’s in Traditional Oriental Medicine in 2009.

 

Sandy had clinical experience practicing acupuncture at the Saint Vincent’s Hospital -HIV Clinic, the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases – Initiative for Women with Disabilities, NYU Medical Center, and Pacific College Acupuncture Clinic, and now her own practices in NYC and Miami Beach, FL. She is also certified in Constitutional Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture.

 

Sandy loves to integrate the science, art, and wisdom of acupuncture into her practice. With her personal study of spiritual & consciousness practices, Sandy has the ability to facilitate and create a space where her patients are driven to empower themselves through the medicine.
